Manage App Rules

App Rules will replace existing 'Global App Settings' and group specific settings. The 'Default' app rule is used in place of 'Global App Settings'. Existing group specific settings will have a corresponding app rule created and assigned to members retroactively. Moving forward, administrators should assign app rules in addition to group membership if enforcing settings for certain groups. For customers who leverage our API and group membership to apply settings, ensure your tools are updated to assign appropriate app rules as simply adding a member to a group will only apply the 'Default' app rule.

App rules enable Parsec for Teams administrators to configure and assign settings to specific users and computers. App rules can be assigned to all users of a group, or directly to particular members or computers for increased flexibility. Each Team has a 'Default' rule which can be modified, but not deleted. If a team member or computer is not assigned a custom app rule, the 'Default' rule is applied. Team administrators with 'Manage App Rules' permission can create custom app rules.

The following settings can be configured per App Rule:

Feature Settings:

  • Show Arcade
  • Show Friends
  • Use Team Websocket
  • Allow copy and paste
  • Allow Logout on Team Computers
  • Host Privacy Mode
  • Host Virtual Monitors

High Performance Relay Server Settings:

  • High Performance Relay Server Host Addresses

Security Settings:

  • Enforce SAML
  • Enforce Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
  • Enforce IP address verification

To modify the 'Default' app rule, administrators need 'Manage Default App Rules App Config' permission. Only 'Super Admin' users can change security settings.

Create App Rule

To create a new App Rule, administrators need 'Manage App Rules' permission.

  1. On the App Rules tab, click 'Create New Ruleset'

  2. Provide a name for the app rule
  3. Click 'Create Ruleset'

  4. Configure settings appropriate for expected security and use case, then save changes.

Assign App Rule

App rules can be assigned from the 'App Rules', 'Members & Invites', 'Group Management', or 'Team Computers' tabs, during an invite, or during installation. A user or computer can only have one rule assigned at a time. Rules assigned to computers override rules assigned to users. For example, if a rule assigned to a user has watermarking disabled but the same user connects to a computer that has watermarking enabled via app rules, the stream will be watermarked.

App Rules Tab
App rules can be assigned to team members or computers under the 'Assigned Members' or 'Assigned Computers' tabs.

Members & Invites Tab
App rules can be assigned by clicking the 'Ruleset' dropdown next to the corresponding user, then clicking the appropriate rule. Administrators need 'Manage Team Members to App Rules' to assign team members to app rules.mceclip8.png

Alternatively, an app rule can be assigned when creating an invite to your Parsec for Teams tenant. If a custom app rule is not selected when creating an invite, the 'Default' rule is applied.

Group Management Tab
Administrators have the option of applying app rules to all or only selected members of a group. Group specific settings applied prior to general availability of App Rules will have a corresponding app rule created and applied to group members automatically.

Team Computers Tab
Team computers can have app rules assigned to them. App rules applied to a Team computer take precedence over rules applied to a user.

During Installation
Parsec administrators may choose to assign an app rule to a Team computer during installation. The Parsec application installer supports a 'team_app_rule_id' parameter to enforce an app rule on first launch, simplifying computer based app rule management. 

Example:

./parsec_windows.exe /silent /shared /team_id=my_team_id /team_computer_key=team_computer_key /team_app_rule_id=app_rule_id /team_group_id=group_id

Delete App Rule

To delete an app rule, select a rule and scroll to the bottom. Click 'Delete Ruleset'. Team members and computers will revert back to the 'Default' app rule if their assigned rule is deleted. Administrators need 'Manage App Rules' permission to delete app rules.
